Bed and Breakfast Bassenthwaite

About Lakeside Country Guest House

This lovely detached Edwardian house was built in 1904 to accommodate the manager of the Bassenthwaite railway which closed in the 1960's. The house was the first to be built overlooking the lake and remains one of just a handful of properties with this outstanding view. (Planning regulations now prevent building around lakes in National Parks to protect their natural beauty.) The impressive hallway is the first glimpse of this charming house which will be your home for the duration of your stay.Lakeside Country Guest House has been sympathetically refurbished over the years to include all of the home comforts and modern amenities one would expect but the original oak floors, panelling and fabulous stain glass window remain. The latest change in 2015 was to update the en-suites and extend and totally refurbish the en-suites in both the superior rooms and triple room. As we understand it Lakeside Country Guest House first opened its doors to paying guests in 1952. The “landlady” knew an MP and because of Lakeside's more secluded location was a popular choice with members of parliament to bring their mistresses! (If only rooms could talk!!)
